What is COPD?

COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It describes a number of lung conditions like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It can cause:

  • Breathlessness when active or at rest
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Coughing, often mucusy.

The symptoms of COPD can make it difficult to stay active and everyday activities can become harder and more tiring.

Sometimes your symptoms will be better and sometimes worse. When they get worse, it’s called an exacerbation or flare-up. Talk to your doctor or medical professional about planning the best way for you to manage flare-ups when they happen.
